Why Do Only 1-2% of Network Marketers Reach the Top Position in Their Company?

By Deb Harrell

According to statistics from DSA.org (the Direct Selling Association), direct selling, which includes network marketing, boasted retail sales of $35.2 billion in 2019, up from $29.6 billion in 2008. These sales came from 6.8 million distributors (or representatives) selling to 36.9 million customers. The wellness category claims the largest percentage at 36% of total sales.

Women make up 74% of the industry’s distributor base, with people between the ages of 25 and 54 making up 77% of the total. A whopping 87% of representatives claim to work only part-time (less than 30 hours per week) on their businesses.

In 2020, DSA estimates that 77% of people in the United States are interested in flexible, entrepreneurial/income-earning opportunities. One of the substantial reasons direct sales are so attractive to this 77% of Americans is the small amount of initial capital investment necessary. DSA reports that the average start-up costs only $82.50 in the industry versus much higher costs for other professions, such as real estate. Direct Selling offers the average Jane or Joe like me an opportunity to be a viable business owner for practically no investment of money. You get to use sweat equity to build your business and achieve the American dream of entrepreneurship!

Most people become a distributor in the network marketing industry to earn short & long-term supplemental income. They are attracted to the flexibility and networking opportunities the industry offers. Although only 19% of people originally get involved because they want it to become their career, 29% stay involved because they see it as a viable career path. Although you can make substantial part-time income in network marketing, reaching the top is not an effortless task and is currently reserved for only 1-2% of distributors on average. I intend to change that with the Flourish for Network Marketing Program!

My 30+ years in the network marketing/direct sales industry taught me one important thing – that most people, despite what they say, will not make it to the top.  It’s a fact that the statistics bear out.  As a leader in that industry, it presented my biggest challenge.  I wanted so desperately to help people achieve their goals. My team had things they desperately wanted to accomplish. They had reasons to make the next level, and then the next, all the way to the top. But try as they did, most never made it into the top three positions. It frustrated me. It saddened me. I questioned my own abilities to coach them, motivate them, guide them. I now realize the missing piece was emotional intelligence.

They define emotional intelligence as the ability to identify and manage one’s own emotions and the emotions of others. Emotional intelligence includes awareness of your own emotions and awareness of the emotions of others. It also includes the ability to manage your emotions and recognize and respond appropriately to others’ emotions. These skills make you a better friend, parent, spouse, and sponsor. Basically, emotional intelligence requires you to understand yourself and others better.

Because network marketing is relationship marketing, being emotionally intelligent is imperative to success in the industry. People present the biggest joys in the business and the biggest challenges. Fortunately, you can hone these skills and raise your emotional intelligence.

So imagine for a minute you reached your next goal, whatever position that is for you. What would that mean to you? How would you feel achieving it? Quickly after that, you could move on to the next level, and then the next. In the not-too-distant future, you are standing on the stage, giving your acceptance speech for achieving the top position. How does that feel? What does it mean to you and your loved ones? How does it affect your lives? What dreams will you get to fulfill? Is it that once-in-a-lifetime trip your family has dreamed and talked about for so long? Is it that new car you’ve had your eyes on? Maybe it is a large sum of money you’ve always wanted to give to your favorite charity. Or maybe you want to experience that sense of satisfaction that comes from knowing you overcame your fears or inadequacies to achieve what few people do. Imagine.

Gratefully I achieved what only 1.2% of individuals in my company achieve, the top position of National Marketing Director. I accomplished that within four years of beginning in the business, and I am 100% sure it is thanks to the thousands of dollars and countless hours I invested in my personal growth before entering the business. That growth over the years raised my EQ – or emotional quotient – to where I could succeed in a relatively short timeframe.  If I can do it, I promise you can too.

With LifeThrive’s program, I found a short-cut to becoming emotionally intelligent. It is a game-changer for anyone in the industry, and I am excited to bring it to the millions of people who truly want to achieve success in their businesses.  I hope you will join us so you too can achieve your wildest dreams!
